Netflix Will Stream Games Now
Netflix has started its tests on streaming video games directly to devices. It eliminates the need for downloads or powerful consoles.
The streaming age of gaming
Netflix is currently experimenting with two streaming video games exclusively for users in Canada and the United Kingdom. These games are available on certain TV models, Windows PCs, macOS computers, and mobile devices. At present, gaming consoles such as Microsoft’s Xbox Series X or Sony’s PlayStation 5 are not yet supported.
Mike Verdu, the VP of Games at Netflix, announced that the company is in the early stages of developing games and will be offering two games to beta testers. The first game, called Oxenfree, is a spooky narrative adventure that was acquired by Netflix in 2021 from Night School Studio. The second game is an arcade-style gem-mining game called Molehew’s Mining Adventure.
“This limited beta is meant to test our game streaming technology and controller, and to improve the member experience over time,” Verdu wrote.
How it works
In 2021, Netflix introduced downloadable games to its collection. However, they have now launched a new initiative that allows for larger and more advanced games to be streamed to any compatible device. These games are played remotely on a server and then displayed on your screen, so a stable internet connection is all you need to enjoy them.
According to Verdu, the limited test will support Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast with Google TV, LG TVs, Nvidia Shield TV, Roku devices and TVs, Samsung Smart TVs, and Walmart ONN TVs as the types of televisions that can be used. Additional devices will be added on an ongoing basis.
Current state of affairs
So far, there has been no indication of support for video game controllers or any game consoles. The existing iOS controller app only provides a limited number of buttons, making it improbable that more complicated games will be available until the app is improved or physical controller support is provided.
According to a representative from Netflix, the streaming service currently has more than 70 games that can be downloaded on mobile devices.
When asked about the possibility of developing a physical controller or supporting console controllers in the future, Netflix stated that they are fully committed to their controller mobile app. This allows users to experience the studio’s games without having to purchase additional hardware.
Bet on gaming
Why is Netflix’s expansion into gaming significant? Gaming is another form of entertainment that competes for user attention, alongside television, movies, and social video platforms. Like movies, video games tell stories and can transport players to different worlds, but with the added element of choice and interactivity.
Some of Netflix’s streaming rivals, such as Amazon and Apple, have ventured into the gaming industry. Amazon provides multiple gaming perks for Prime members and owns the video game streaming service Twitch, while Apple earns revenue from gaming by taking a 30% commission on all in-app purchases made through its extensive App Store. Additionally, Apple has its own subscription service called Apple Arcade, which features exclusive games.
